The thesis looks at how social change can be effected through participation in the arts and examines this in the context of Timor-Leste in South East Asia. It includes, among others, case studies of existing initiatives in Timor-Leste, overview of models and approaches (such as social action, arts as therapy, and community cultural development) and a review of the literature on initiatives in which participatory arts are applied as a tool for social change.
