Award-winning artist Mahtab Hussain has been documenting the changing identity of the Muslim community for over four years, exploring the important relationship between identity and masculinity. His revealing portraits focus on Muslim identity in Britain and the dichotomy depicted by individuals who consider and present themselves as Muslim men, but whose lives have existed wholly in the UK.
Mahtab Hussain studied a BA in History of Art at Goldsmith College specialising in fine art photography. Currently, the artist is developing his practice at Nottingham Trent University with mentoring from Max Kandhola and the support of the Arts Humanities Research Council. In addition, Mahtab is working on his forthcoming publication to be published by Lucid-ly with design by Kummer & Herrman. He has also been commissioned by Multistory to contribute to their Black Country Stories project.
Mahtab has exhibited at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, mac Birmingham (supported by the Arts Council), View Finder Photography Gallery, London, Sumarria Lunn Gallery, London and Arles Photo Festival, France. In 2012, the artist won the Culture Cloud, Curators Choice Award at New Art Exchange in Nottingham, and was recently Format 13 Portfolio Review Award Winner for his series ‘You Get Me?’
